A dinner in honour of an Earl and a Countess

 In TasteHistory

Imagine… a bevy of ladies in spectacular evening gowns, impeccably-mannered gentlemen making small talk, soft lights from beautiful crystal chandeliers, musicians playing classical tunes, and divine smells wafting up from the kitchens. It’s the 2nd of December 1952, the venue is the Casino Maltese in Valletta, and a dinner is being hosted in honour of Earl Mountbatten of Burma and Countess Mountbatten. That same year, Mountbatten had been appointed Commander-in-Chief of the British Mediterranean Fleet and NATO Commander of the Allied Forces Mediterranean, based in Malta.
